The Macquarie Marshes is one of the largest remaining inland semi-permanent wetlands in south-eastern Australia. There are extensive areas of Phragmites reeds, River Red Gum woodlands, and mixed marsh floodplains. It was listed as a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 1986.
How to see the Macquarie Marshes
You can see parts of the Marshes from the road if you travel along Gibson Way, from either Quambone on the eastern side of the Marshes or the Carinda Road on the western side of the Marshes. You should always check road conditions before heading out, particularly following rain. There is accommodation available on Gibson Way at Willie Retreat.
You can also have a Marshes experience from the elevated position of the Burrima Boardwalk. It’s a private property on the western edge of the Northern Nature Reserve, accessible via the Carinda Road. Visitor access to Burrima is via online registration (link below), or you can get help to book from the Visitor Information Centre during opening hours.
