Rivers are for people, wildlife and sustainability. This is the vision of not-for-profit organisation, RiverSmart Australia, founded in late 2008. We’ve been working the length the Wambuul/ Macquarie River, upstream and down of Dubbo NSW, and into the Macquarie Marshes/ Maliyanga ngurra, for the past 8 years.

We’ve been advancing a range of community-based initiatives such as Landcare works, catch and release fishing competitions, art and movies by the river, school education programs and the development of the Macquarie River Trails tourism initiative. Boosting community engagement in caring for the river and the marshes are at the heart of our initiatives. If it can grow employment too—that’s even better! We work closely with farming groups, Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, Aboriginal representative organisations, community groups and other not-for-profits.

RiverSmart Australia established the Window on the Wetlands Centre in Warren in 2015—an education, recreation and cultural centre. We run schools-based and adult education programs about how to look after our waterways.
