Schools

Our Schools Discovery Program is environmental-based education that provides the opportunity for young minds to explore and learn about the importance of wetland ecosystems and their biodiversity. We cater for both primary and secondary students and work closely with Aboriginal organisations, community groups, educational institutions, Landcare, and TAFE NSW. RiverSmart Australia’s programs inform about the way our rivers have been used and changed, the importance of our rivers for our communities and environment, as well as the impact we have on the rivers.

With Tiger Bay Wetlands next door to the Window on the Wetlands (WOW) Centre, this is an ideal place to run education programs for schools and adults on how to value and look after our waterways, plants and environment.

We can customise a program to suit your needs to fit with the topics you are concentrating on within the Years K-12 curriculum, with guided activities centred around sustaining river life. For example, we do activities relating to habitats including dip netting, plant, animal and macroinvertebrate species identification, water quality testing, fact-finding treasure hunts, and more.

Our team of experienced educators, environmentalists and program designers are ready to collaborate to meet the needs of students.

Activities at the WOW centre were particularly good. Students loved seeing different birds’ nests, searching for particular floral stems and foliage from the WOW garden, and completing the treasure hunt. WOW volunteer Jim did a wonderful job sparking curiosity in our students. He had a great manner with the students and lessons were well paced. – Tooraweenah Public School, 2023

If you’d like to visit the Macquarie Marshes, we can provide a guide to enhance your experience and to gain a better understanding of how the ecology of the system works, the changes that happen under different seasonal conditions, and the value of the Marshes as a rich site of biodiversity.

There are many different ways of delivering the Schools Discovery Program, so email us or phone 0418 952 177 to talk about the options.
